Fear vs. Love: What Truly Motivates Your Healthy Choices
Are you motivated by fear or by love?
Why do you make the choices you make when it comes to your health and wellness? Are your decisions motivated by fear—avoiding illness, fatigue, or stress—or are they inspired by self-love and a genuine desire to thrive? Understanding the driving force behind your actions can transform your approach to self-care and help you build sustainable, healthy habits.
The Problem with Fear-Based Choices:
Fear is a strong survival mechanism and it can motivate us to take action. Many people seek my help after a “health scare”—a diagnosis, a wake-up call from blood test results, or the illness of someone they care about. This fear drives them to make changes, which, in itself, is not a bad thing.
But fear-based resolutions often feel like a chore or even punishment. Once the crisis passes, the motivation to sustain these changes can fade and we revert back to old ways and habits.
The Power of Self-Love in Building Healthy Habits:
On the other hand, if you were to choose these same changes for yourself, not from a place of fear, but rather out of self-love, self-care and a genuine desire to thrive, how might this shift the energy around those choices?
Imagine this:
You go to bed early, not because you’re afraid of being tired but because you value waking up refreshed.
You exercise because movement enlivens your body and clears your mind, not because you feel guilty.
You nourish yourself with healthy food because you feel so good when you eat well, not because you’re avoiding weight gain or illness.
When your choices are fueled by self-love, they feel nurturing, empowering, and sustainable.
A Simple Shift: How to Choose Self-Care Over Fear
Next time you find yourself thinking, “Uggh, I should do XYZ,” PAUSE. Ask yourself:
Is this choice motivated by fear or love?
How can I make this action a true act of self-care, of self-nurture?
How will I feel after I’ve made this choice?
By practicing this mindset shift, you’ll not only feel better but also create lasting habits that support your growth and well-being.
Each good choice builds on the last and we feel better both in ourselves and about ourselves and so we continue to make further good choices.
Take Action: Build a Life You Love
By shifting your motivation to self-love, you can create a life where healthy habits feel like a joy, not a chore. Remember: the choice is always yours, and it’s never too late to start thriving.
